‘Na vele maanden van reflectie en interne discussies, hebben we ervoor gekozen om dit jaar een verandering in gang te zetten,’ schrijven Harry en Meghan. Ze zeggen voor zichzelf een ‘progressieve nieuwe rol’ binnen het koningshuis te willen creëren. ‘Het komt door jullie aanmoediging, vooral de laatste jaren, dat we er klaar voor zijn deze verandering te maken.’

Het koppel neemt niet alleen een nieuwe rol aan, maar kondigt ook aan deels in Engeland én deels in Noord-Amerika te gaan wonen. Harry en Meghan zeggen die keuze te hebben gemaakt, omdat ze willen dat hun zoon Archie opgroeit met ‘waardering voor de koninklijke traditie waarin hij geboren is’ terwijl hun familie ook de ruimte krijgt om aan ‘een nieuw hoofdstuk’ te beginnen. Zo willen ze onder andere een nieuw liefdadigheidsproject starten.

In de toekomst zal het stel meer over deze ‘spannende stap’ delen, schrijven ze op Instagram. Ook benadrukken ze dat ze blijven samenwerken met koningin Elizabeth, prins Charles, prins William en ‘andere relevante partijen’.
