Pop met obesitas

Eerder deze maand introduceerde Nike plussize paspoppen om de ‘diversiteit en inclusiviteit’ van sport te vieren. Er volgden veel enthousiaste reacties, maar ook kritiek. Zo zou de paspop volgens The Telegraph ‘een leugen’ verkopen – want volle vrouwen kunnen volgens de Britse krant niet rennen. ‘Ze is waarschijnlijk een diabetespatiënt op weg naar een heupoperatie’, schrijft een columnist in The Telegraph.

Excuses van Olcay

In RTL Boulevard noemde Olcay Gulsen de pop een ‘vrij extreme uitvergroting’ van het gangbare model. Ze heeft hier inmiddels haar excuses voor aangeboden.

‘Omarm je rondingen’

Uiteraard volgde er al snel tegenreacties. ‘Lieve dames omarm je rondingen en maat’, benadrukt presentatrice en tv-kok Miljuschka Witzenhausen vandaag bijvoorbeeld op Instagram. ‘Ik heb maat 40-44 en zit heerlijk in mijn vel.’ Voor Miljuschka zit geluk niet in ‘de perfecte kledingmaten maar in een lekkere maaltijd, een knuffel van je kind of wakker worden met je liefde.’

Fleurige leggings en marathons

In reactie op het Telegraph-artikel plaatsen Britse vrouwen foto’s van zichzelf in sportkleding tijdens trainingen of marathons op Instagram. ‘Mensen vragen zich af waarom dikke mensen zich niet welkom voelen in de sportschool – dit is waarom’, schrijft Jennifer Buckham bij een foto van zichzelf in een fleurige sportlegging. Een ander plaatst een foto van haar deelname aan een marathon: ‘Denk je nog steeds dat ik met mijn lichaamstype niet kan rennen?’

Sporten is ook voor plussize vrouwen

Ook The Guardian snapt niet waarom de plussize poppen niet door iedereen omarmd worden: ‘Het maakt niet uit hoeveel je weegt, het is belangrijk actief te zijn.’ De krant vindt niet dat de poppen obesitas ‘verheerlijken’, maar sporten juist inclusief maakt en aanmoedigt. Op eenzelfde toon benadrukt ook Women’s Health dat sporten voor iedereen is. “Ook met ‘een maatje meer’ kun je op atletisch niveau presteren”, zegt het sporttijdschrift. En zo is het maar net.

I just really had to put my two cents in about the article in @telegraph by Tanya Gold that rips apart @nike ’s use of plus size mannequins and calls them a “dangerous lie”. Instead of celebrating that more diverse bodies are being shown in the context of the fitness space the author goes on an anti obesity crusade which is so ironic because they are showing activewear that gives bigger bodies more clothing options when working out. That mannequin with the bigger body represents me, in fact my body is even bigger than that mannequin. People wonder why fat people don’t feel welcome in the fitness space – THIS IS WHY! In my personal experience in this space I have dealt with several uncomfortable situations that range from mildly unnerving like being asked passively aggressively what snacks I eat to downright abusive like when a trainer called me a disappointment for not losing the weight he thought I should that week. My experiences are unfortunately not unique to me as a plus size person. I wish growing up I had seen mannequins like this and plus size people represented in the fitness world. I find that seeing bodies like mine represented encourages me to move and take care of myself physically. Health looks different on everyone, health is holistic, mental health matters, your health is your own business, and regardless of health we are all still worthy as human beings. A big reminder for the all people so concerned about fat people’s “health” you can not hate and shame yourself into positive long lasting wellbeing. I am exhausted by fat phobia masquerading under the guise of “health concerns”. This isn’t new and this isn’t the last time, but we have to call it out when we see it and it’s not going to stop me from putting on my cute plus size activewear and continue doing the things that feel right for my body ✌🏼
